trippi. as we do every week we look at the electoral map. info on the key. red states are romney states. blue, obama. then the pinkish lean romney. light blue, lean obama. then the yellow states are tossup states. within the margin of error. this is all based on the polls within the last 30 days. okay, karl, what has changed in the last week since we talked? >> we had 46 polls last week in 22 states. four states moved toward president obama and changed status. iowa, ohio, nevada, all battleground states moved from tossup to lean obama. montana moved from romney to lean romney. there were 11 other states then moved toward obama but had no change in status. there were five states that moved toward governor romney. but again had no change in status. >> joe, of those, what is most important? >> i mean the biggest thing is that shift in nevada and ohio. those two in particular. ohio, obviously, a big move. moving it to lean obama, it puts for the first time, i think since we started back in april, it puts obama with over the 270 electoral votes. we had that back then. it's coming clear today

states. florida, virginia, and ohio romney is tight in the races with the states of fluidity, florida and virginia. in florida obama and romney are neck and neck. virginia romney has narrowed the lead from 5 to 2. another statistical tie. in ohio the president has improved his standing. he leads romney there by eight points. and for those wondering about the party idea the sample is less democratic in ohio this time than the last poll. digging deeper into our numbers we divided thet battleground states by three measures. president's job rating. romney's favorability rating that number is still under water he has problems and the question of which candidate is better equipped to manage the economy. remember the unemployment rate is 5.9% in virginia. romney's favorable in florida but under in virginia and ohio. when it comes to who is better able to manage the economy a question on which romney has staked his candidacy romney has a margin of error lead in florida and virginia. the president leads on that question in ohio. with iowa, new hampshire and ohio headed to the obama column that

the last several months. the president has enjoyed an unfavorable positive rating in each state. romney's likability score has been more mix. with the exception of virginia, north carolina and florida, his strongest three states, his likability has been upside-down. that may have changed but we will be in our next round of polls interested to see if the debate has reset the campaign in terms of these numbers. you have heard a lot of -- that was sold. pathways to the 270 alecto world votes and how president obama probably has more pathways to that war easier ways of putting that together because it was built in the. state/read state differences but let me make a couple points on this. if you start with the. states and add florida which is 29 it is that 2 is 66 and would meet any of the other states to get 270. if you start again with the 237 and give romney ohio--give romney florida but obama of ohio, he is at 255 and obama would need two under states as long as one of them isn't new hampshire. only foury 40 votes. a comment on this. these states are pretty much all close. although the c

governor romney for the first time gets on the same stage as the president of the united states, people can make a direct comparison about them and their visions for the future and wednesday night is the restart of the campaign and i think you'll start to see the numbers move back in the other direction. >> how do you restart the campaign, governor, at the last moment where you can reach tens of millions of people. why isn't it too late to believe that the presidential debates, after you announce your running mate, after you have a convention, that you can restart with the presidential debates? >> absolutely. you're going to have tens of millions of people for the very first time, david, really tuning in and paying attention to this race. and also, for the first time you're going to have them be able to make a direct side-by-side comparison. remember, the end of the day, campaigns are about the candidates. they're going to be able to see these two candidates next to each other, debating each other and governor romney, i know is going to do a great job wednesday night of laying out his visio

a lot ground on governor romney in swing states. today, as polls show the race is tightening in those swing states, we are seeing this. everything from a presidential wedding anniversary to coverage of the candidate eye blinking. in surprise to my next guest, pat caddell. i am looking at the polls that i check each day, and, whoa, whoa, whoa, it is close again. now, what do you make of it? >>pat: you know why. i gave a speech on it a week ago and i have been on this. the press has gone to places, the mainstream immediate why it has never gone in support of a candidate, both in terms of the coverage of libya, what we are not being told, and, also, on the polls. they have a narrative. the narrative is obama is winning big. they have producing -- been producing polls that show that. they are getting a lot of democrats and they doing polls on race, age, sex and more. these are news organizations that are supposed to be broke, cutting news staffs and they are spending thousands and thousands on the state presidents that are very, in my opinion, flawed. what they doing, is a narrative that

in the battleground states. >>> mitt romney could make a huge impact on the supreme court. how he could change the direction of the court for decades. >>> they make $10 a day to put their lives on the line. but they could lose their job ifs they don't lose some weight. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> we're now just 36 days from the presidential election and nationally our brand-new cnn/orc poll of likely voters shows the race between president obama and governor romney remaining up for grabs. the president leads 50% to 47%. but his three-point margin is within the poll's sampling error. our chief national correspondent john king is in denver getting ready for the debate over there. that's the site of the debate. john, take us into these numbers. what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, wolf, i can tell you this, talking to senior officials in the romney campaign, they believe after a tough week or ten days, the last several days, they have a little bit of a breeze at their back. they say the race has stabilized. you dig into the numbers. what is the most important issue in

approval rating, romney favorability, and who wins on the economy. in three states, the president had a job approval rating of 49 or above. romney's unfavorable rating was higher than his favorable rating, and the president led romney on the economy. in three of those stays, iowa, ohio, new hampshire. just one state did you have the president's job approval rating 48% or over and romney winning on the issue of the economy. that's north carolina. if you look at it that way and go to the map to 270, what does that mean, and you put those four states into the respective categories, and look at. this the president for suur sho. romney a long way to go has to sweep the rest. there are five left in the background. florida, virginia, wisconsin, colorado, nevada. this is where if romney does do what chris christie said he will do, the first place you'll see it are in the five states that are left. >> ralph reed, that's a lot of movement that has to take place to overcome where the campaign is. yet you heard chris christie say it this morning on the program, we'll have a new dynamic come thursday mo

of the united states. >> as you well know, governor romney has been heavily criticized from his own side, conservative critics, and the chorus has been pretty striking. the latest that got a lot of attention, charles crowdheimer in "the washington post." this was the headline. go large, mitt. and the argument was he was not creating a large contrast, talking in detail about what his presidency would mean. >> i think he just has to lay out his plan and his vision. and i like charles and the other folks who are laying out critical columns right now. but the fact of the matter is, in the end this is about governor romney over the next four or five weeks laying that vision out for folks. you know, folks like us obsess about this stuff, david. but the general public that i speak to in new jersey and elsewhere are just beginning to really tune in to this race. so they're going to start tuning in on wednesday night. and when they do, governor romney will lay out his vision for a better and greater america, for greater opportunity, for all of our citizens, and i think that's when you're going to

. a month ago, president obama was leading by to points in the great state of florida this is a state romney has to win. again, we are seeing a modest shift. with a four-point shift and it goes from obama up by two, to romney up by two, it is significant. >> now the great state of ohio, that poll, i saw it was obama by 8 percent or 9 percent. there is volatility in the polls. when george bush was running it showed he was up by eight or ten and in ohio he won by two. president obama has been ahead in ohio a state that mitt romney has been struggling. right now, romney is still down by a point there. but it is a competitive situation. the fact is, all three of these states have nobody, really, in the lead. they are pure toss ups. the question is whether this is just a bounce that will fade or is it something that mitt romney can build upon and carry through the remaining month. >> now, someone from real clear politics said maybe the jobless numbers today could benefit president obama a little bit but give us a sense of how long these things last, how long the bounce lasts and what we should lo

. it was in june that a top state republican lawmaker predicted the law would help governor romney. >> which is going to allow governor romney to win the state of pennsylvania, done. >> and joining us now, judith brown, diana's co-director of the advancement project, a civil rights organization that filed the lawsuit. thank you for your time. we played that state lawmaker who said if that law was in effect in pennsylvania, he felt that governor romney would win that state, done. the polling shows opposite. nevertheless there was a concern. let's talk about the split decision. the judge is blocking it for now, but what happens next? >> well, you know, this is a big victory for democracy. it paves the way for free, fair, and accessible voting. we know that there were hundreds of thousands of people who would have been impacted by this and would not have had the i.d. we're very pleased that, in fact, in november people can vote without that i.d. we will continue to fight this law because we know that in the end that it impacts elderly voters, young voters and people of color and veterans in the

votes. mitt romney would have to run the table of every other swing state to get to victory. and clearly, romney's so-called supporters are now reaching for desperate measures. >> on the eve of the first presidential debate, a bombshell is about to be dropped on the white house because tonight you'll hear from barack obama like you've never heard from him before. >> oh, yes, that was the introduction last night before fox aired tape of a 2007 speech by then-candidate obama to a group of black ministers in which he criticized the response to hurricane katrina and provided certain analysts with an excuse for a little racial fear mongering. >> what's happening down in new orleans? where's your dollar? where's your stafford act money? makes no sense. tells me the bullet hasn't been taken out. >> do you notice a change in the way he delivers this speech? >> this accent is absurd. this is not the way obama talks. in is not a dog whistle. this is a dog siren. >> it's incendiary -- >> yes, it's just about as incendiary as two white dudes debates how black is too black in a black man's speech. in

in battleground states like wisconsin. the challenge is for the democrats, they keep saying -- oh, romney lied. guess what? they lost the last debate and they can't get over it. they are now putting this blanketed blame on romney. it's unbelievable to me. why can't they fegss and you say they lost. >> heather: there is some pundits have said they found surprising and that was president obama did not address the 47 of or bain capital. do you think biden will do that? >> yes. he should address it, but i think he should address paul ryan's makers versus takers, he said 30%. he didn't say 47%. he said 30% are moochers take from government. there is a lot of material. he clearly has shown given his convention speech that he has an issue with the truth, as well. it's not democrats saying we're not fessing up to losing the debate. guilty is over. we are looking forward and ahead. this is unique opportunity to call ryan out for mistruths and misleading statements he has said over and over again. it's a unique opportunity and i think joe biden is up to the challenge and he will be very aggressive on th

you think is the real state of the economy right now and what mitt romney has in his position tonight? >>guest: the most important thing is mitt romney needs to show that the president and his previous budget that he has proposed with trillions of dollars in new taxes only does one thing: it grows the debt. it does not do anything if the deficit we have had. you give the bigger growth to the federal government. we have to have policies that provide the certainty to the private sector, the policies that enable them to grow. again, this is not saying we don't need any regulation but we need to have smart regulations. in california dairy year 2011, 71,000 pages of new regulations were institutessed. the people in the coal industry, when you look at what has happened to them when we could not get cap and trade moved through they are getting decimated. we have to have a vision like ronald reagan said, talking about a new dawn for this american economy. >>neil: congressman, you are among those who were brought in, in the republican avalanche that brought in 83 republicans and that tipped th

, and behind in the battle gowned states so the pressure is on governor romney to change the dynamics of the debate. he's going to help that he can think on his feet and come up with real spontaneous responses, the fact that he's too scripted has actually worked against him. the president has to turn in a work man like performance kind of like he did at the convention, nothing that's spectacular, but nothing that loses him any ground. but a lot of pressure on romney. >> same question to you, wayne, on which one has the more pressure on him factor. >> it's really both, certainly given the way the race has been going, mitt romney has been a lot to prove, this could be a big make or break moment for him. but the way expectations have been set, which is to say that romney, after performing poorly sometimes on the stump and not as well as president obama which of course is lauded for his great oratory, i think people expect a lot from president obama, so if he does turn in a work man like performance, or if he falls into any of his traps, if he looks peevish, anything along those lines, he

me start with you. it looks like mitt romney is significantly down in the important swing states. does your strategy shift now and if so how? >> i think he has to be aggressive, without seeming to be aggressive and i think it's a tricky act for him to pull off. i think that his supporters realize that he is probably behind as the polls indicate and that he needs to really change some minds tonight. i think in some way there's more pressure on president obama simply because the polls indicate and most people expect that he will win the debate and that's a tough position to be in. but at the same time because governor romney has to do so much more -- he has to change the course of this race tonight, and that puts an enormous amount of pressure on him. so he is going to try to be aggressive, but his advisors in one ear are saying be aggressive, and in the other ear they are saying be a nice guy. the president's popularity ratings are high. you can't be too over the top and come off unlikable. >> cenk: i think that's it exactly. and can he pull off that really t

own state, colorado, our latest poll showing president obama with a five-point lead over mitt romney. 5 50-45%. the political landscape there changed since george bush won that state. president obama though carrying it by nine points in '08. in your opinion, what has changed? >> what's changed in colorado is we have a lot more high-tech industry. we have a lot of renewable energy and solar. and we have voters who really care about the environment and the economy. and president obama, his policies really appeal to those voters a lot more. it's interesting that now it's a five-point lead because for about six months, up until a week or two ago, president obama had a narrow one to two-point le lead, so that really shows that president obama is breaking out in some of the key swing states like colorado. >> we shall all be watching tonight to see how things go down there in denver. diana degette, thank you, i appreciate it. >>> up next, painting denver pink. planned parenthood launches an anti romney blitz in colorado. i'm going to talk to the organization's president. >>> plus, bringing
